Question: upgrading operating system and hdd on Macbook pro mid 2010

Hi,

I have a 15" macbook pro mid 2010 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 running on OS X Yosemite 10.10.5.

In the past I removed the cd and replaced it with my old 500 gig hdd and used the hdd slot for a ssd 500 gig which my system runs on. (so now i have two hard drives: sad and hdd)

2 questions:

I would like to upgrade my hdd capacity, what is the maximum size i can use? and what model is compatible?

I would like to upgrade my operating system, what is the latest I can use?

Many thanks :-)

MacBook Pro, iOS 8.1.2

  1. Please read https://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1527/en_US/MacBook_Pro_15inch_Mid2 010.pdf and refer to Chapter 3. The theoretical maximum is nearly 8 EB which far exceeds anything available today. You can use literally any commercially available hard disk drive. SSDs are another matter.
