Desktop items disappeared

After closing Safari I noticed that about 90% of my desktop items had disappeared. I found them in trash and moved them to the desktop.

Some Programs had also disappeared and I can not find them on my MacBook Pro. I also searched for them in my Time Machine but they are gone from there also.

What could cause this to happen. Where should I look to find the removed programs?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

What happened to sidebar.plist in preferences? It seems after every update, something goes haywire. lost tool bar in safari lost tool bar in safari. Was there now it is gone . Favorites is gone in side bar too I cannot load any favorites sites to the tool bar or favorites menu.
