Recyle Program In Store

I am looking to recycle my iPad 4 and purchase a new model. I looked at the Renew and Recycle program guidelines on the apple website, and got a tentative quote on how much the gift card they'd give me would be for.

My question is - if I bring my iPad into the actual Apple store, do they evaluate the device on site, while you are there, and then give you the gift card that you'd be able to use right away? Or do they send it somewhere for evaluation? I'm not able to find any information on this, so hopefully someone here has experience with this. I don't really want to be without an iPad for an extended period of time.

Thank you!
