Numbers Doc - Cannot Open

I created a Number Document yesterday and tried to open it today, but could not. Received message: "The index.xml file is missing." How can I open the file?

Hi Suzanne,

You created the new document using Numbers 3 or Numbers 4, and attempted to open it today using Numbers '09.

The message occurs because the newer versions use a different file system, which does not include an index.xml file, which was part of the file system used by the earlier Numbers '09.

Installing a current version of Numbers did not remove the earlier version. Numbers '09, Pages '09 and Keynote '09 were moved into a new folder, named iWork '09, placed in your Applications folder.

Both versions of these applications will run in your current operating system, and there are several users who have kept both on their machines as they use features of the older application that were not included in the versions after '09. (In most cases, this is more significant with Pages than with Numbers.)

To avoid the message, all that's needed is to ensure you do not attempt of open documents edited in Numbers 3 or Numbers 4 using Numbers '09. You can do this several ways:

  • Put the newer version's icon on the Dock (by locating it in the Applications folder and dragging it's icon to the Dock), then open files by dragging them to that icon and dropping them on it.
  • Right click (or control-click) the document then choose the more current version of Numbers from the menu that pops up.
  • Launch the application, then open the document using File > Open.

Regards,

Barry
