I tried to do install an update for macOS High Sierra but it encountered a problem and recommended I do a hardware test I did this an the test came back with this error code: 4MEM/62/40000000:0x7ed46d90

I'm unsure as to what it means does anybody know?

(I'm using a 2012, 21.5-inch iMac)

It means a general memory failure. The number combination is the location of the failing chip. You should replace the RAM in the machine with new modules.
