It isn't a requirement, but it is a good tool should you do something wrong and infect yourself with malware.

FWIW, I use Malwarebytes for Mac in "on-demand" mode ... which is the same as what you get after the trial period expires. I do not use or would recommend any AV or AM apps that run in background. However, it is equally important that you run periodic scans as Macs can get infected with adware.

I use the free version to do a scan once a month or so. Not found anything so far in 6+ months.
