Question:

Question: Mail in High Sierra - attachments not opening

User uploaded file

All documents attached to email (either to my Gmail or my Yahoo inbox) show up as "Downloading ..." and they never appear. Can't open them.

I've tried rebuilding the mailboxes - nothing changed.

Looking for ideas/suggestions on how to fix this problem.

Thanks

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.6), 24GB, 2TB

Hi,

A Safe Mode boot deletes system caches that might work for you.

To start up in safe mode:

  1. Start or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The white Apple logo appears on your display. If you don't see the Apple logo, learn what to do.
  2. Release the Shift key when you see the login window. If your startup disk is encrypted with FileVault, you might be asked to log in twice: once to unlock the startup disk, and again to log in to the Finder.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac without pressing any keys during startup.

Then try opening mail attachments.

Thank you Carolyn. I'd forgotten about a Safe Mode restart.

Unfortunately it didn't work. I can't open some attachments that came via Gmail when I use Apple Mail. If I go to Gmail via browser, the attachments open fine. Just not in Apple Mail.

Actually you have several issues. One is you need to uninstall Trusteer and Memory Cleaner. You have multiple out-of date softwares installed such as Perian.

I would start with the first two.
