iPad mini 1st gen - forgotten passcode

Hi

I was given a hand-me-down iPad mini in December and reset the passcode then. I haven't used it since but have now dug it out but can't seem to remember the passcode.

I've tried quite a few attempts and now am at 60 min between attempts.

When I try to connect to iTunes to reset the device, I get the following error device:

"iTunes could not connect to the iPad “[my name]'s iPad” because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPad before it can be used with iTunes."

What should I do?

If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - https://support.apple.com/ht204306 - "Follow these steps if you've forgotten your passcode, or if a message says that your device is disabled."

I can't manage to get it into recovery mode.

Which buttons should I be holding down together? I've tried the volume buttons (side) and the home button but no luck.
