OK. Sounds like a corrupted volume. I've had that happen. Do you have a backup?

The one thing to try first is to start with Internet Recovery. You need internet access that doesn't require a "splash screen", such as your own ethernet or WiFi with just a WiFi password. If there's a requirement for an approval of terms and conditions, it won't work.

From there start Disk Utility. Make sure that View>Show All Devices is selected. Then run First Aid on both the top volume and the boot partition. If it can't repair, then you would probably need to start over again. It's easy to recover with a backup. Without one I'd usually recommend getting a new drive and keeping the old one to try and recover the data later.

So you're seeing the Apple logo, then a progress bar, and then it stops and doesn't go any further?

Sounds like a corrupted boot volume most likely. That can end up with a restart, shutdown, or stall at about the same point. It would typically happen after an improper shutdown, such as if it was forced to power off after it froze.

What model do you have? There might be some things you might try, but they depend on what you have.

Nothing important to lose? That's pretty easy. Once Internet Recovery is started, reformat the entire drive (find the physical drive name at the top). Reformat as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Leave the default secure erase options alone. It takes a long time to do a secure erase but less than a minute for simple erase. Then go to Reinstall Mac OS and select the drive. That's essentially a factory reset.

Now if the drive isn't corrupted but is physically damaged, then you will need a new drive.
