No longer have access to iPhoto pictures

Since installing Sierra, I no longer have access to all of my photos I had in iPhoto. The Photos app does not have my old pictures in it. When I try to open iPhoto, it starts loading and says "preparing library" but eventually I always get a notification that Photos had to "unexpectedly shut down."
