On my iMac, my 2 Photo libararies are stored in the Pictures folder. One is my System library. Until recently, in Finder both showed up in the KIND column as Photos Library. Now the System library shows up in KIND as Folder. Any reason for this, and is it normal? I believe it may have happened when I de-optmised the Photo Library and started storing full-size versions on my iMac. Comments welcome
The folder CTC Photos is the Photos library file, but the Finder is treating it as a Folder. You have to tell the Finder, that it is a library.
Add the filename extension ".photoslibrary" to the name of the folder "CTC Photos", so it is remained to "CTC Photos.photoslibrary"
Have you tried to rename it this way. You can do that by opening the "File > Get Info" window for the folder "CTC Photos"
While you are having problems with the Finder not recognizing the correct types of an item, you may want to change the Finder preferences to always display the filename extensions. That makes it easier to see the file type.
You can do that byopening some Finder window,
Check, if the filename extension of your CTC Photos Library is correct.
It should be "CTC Photos Library.photoslibrary", when you select the library in the Finder and enter the key combination ⌘I to open the Info panel. You may have to disable "hide extension" in the "Name & Extension" field.
Click also the disclosure triangle to the left of "Open with:" and set the field to "Photos", if it is set to a differnet application.

Unfortunately, there is no library file I can find amongst the various folders under the main folder CTC Photos (see screenshot), so I am unable to check filename and extension
When I click on the Photos icon, the CTC Photos library opens, so there must be a file which is generating the opening, but I cannot find anything resembling a main library file

Screenshot 1 shows what's in the Contents folder: an 8KB text file - I have extracted and pasted in the text
Screenshot 2 shows that your suggestion worked, and the folder converted back to a photolibrary
Screenshot 3 has the bad news: on opening the library, a Preparing Library box appears and, when it gets to around 3%, an error message saying it is not a valid photo library pops up
Looks as if the whole thing has become corrupted, so I will create a new system library and synch with my main library in iCloud....... Thanks anyway for your most helpful advice
What is strange, is the folder "Contents" inside your library folder CTC Photos. I have never seen a folder Contents in any Photos Library, only in Application bundles. What is inside the folder Contents?
You screenshot shows, that you added the extension ".photolibrary" - without the "s", that would be correct for iPhoto. It should be extension ".photoslibrary" for Photos.
You may want again to try with this extension.
Syncing with your library in iCloud would be a good solution. You only need to be able to open your current Photos Library, if you need to save projects, like books, calendars, slideshows. And invested much time in naming faces.

Adding the missing "s" has done the trick (computers are unforgiving!) and has allowed me to open the libarray and reset it as the system library
In preparing the library (which happened very quickly) a message appeared to say some items have to be downloaded from iCloud
However, the library opens OK and seems to be complete. Unfortunately, on clicking Quit, it won't quit and the spinning beachball appears, the program crashes and then the computer reverts to the log-in screen. After logging in again, the library appears immediately without having to be re-opened, but won't quit, so the same sequence repeats
Obviously, there is some bug still in there, but I will give it a day or two in case it's just a question of allowing the synch with all items in the iCloud library to complete. I will keep you posted on the eventual outcome
