Photo Library stored in Pictures

On my iMac, my 2 Photo libararies are stored in the Pictures folder. One is my System library. Until recently, in Finder both showed up in the KIND column as Photos Library. Now the System library shows up in KIND as Folder. Any reason for this, and is it normal? I believe it may have happened when I de-optmised the Photo Library and started storing full-size versions on my iMac. Comments welcome

How do I update or refresh the list of Photos libraries that I can choose from when opening the Photos app? I've recently installed a larger internal SSD in my iMac, enabling me to transfer my multiple Photos libraries back to my Mac from their former location on a dedicated external hard drive. (I also back up my iMac regularly to Time Machine and another external hard drive.) Now, when I option-open the Photos app to choose a library (other than my system photos library), I don't see the alternate libraries on my iMac in the list, only their copies located on my backup hard drive. I can open the desired libraries by clicking on "Other library…" and navigating to their location, but that doesn't seem to change the list for the next time (i.e., the list doesn't show the alternate library as having been the one opened last). How can I refresh or rebuild this list to always show the libraries located on my Mac?

I just changed to Mac and I am confused on how the photos application works. What exactly is a library? Is it a directory created in the file system on Mac? It says the default system library for Photos is in the Pictures directory. Why don't images stored in the Pictures directory via Finder, appear in the Photos app? Also, when I import pictures from my Downloads directory into my Photos app using Finder, is a second copy of that photo created in the Photos app instead of actually moving the pictures from my Downloads directory into the Photos app? Where exactly are the images stored when they are stored in the Photos library? Why do they not appear in the Pictures directory in Finder when it is the System directory for Photos?

Too many photo and iPhoto libraries: If when trying to open one of three photo libraries I get a message that a 35.44 GB documents file I have on my iMac called iPhoto Library.migratedphotolibrary, indicating its contents was migrated to my 34.84 GB file called Photos Library.photoslibrary, can I just trash the migrated one without loosing any photos? And I have a 3rd file, called iPhoto Library.photoslibrary that's 30.91 GB and is essentially all the same photos as in the first two above. So how do I get safely to having just one Photos Library, with everything in it, without having to go through and check the thousands of photos are all captured in the Photos Library? Thank you,
