My Macbook Pro 13" early 2011 8,1 battery is not lasting very long, usually a couple of hours and most of that time the lid will be closed. I don't watch films on it, maybe a half hour on iplayer, only surf google etc. The cycle count stands at 561 and it states 'Service Battery'. The count seems low. Is this normal and how much does it cost to replace a battery? Thanks. Jon

“Service Battery: The battery isn’t functioning normally. You can safely use your Mac when it's connected to an appropriate power adapter, but you should take it to an Apple Store or Apple-authorized service provider as soon as possible.”

Apple charges $129+tax (US) for a battery replacement service for Unibody MacBook Pro models. However, your model is considered “vintage” and theoretically won’t be serviced with parts directly by Apple. They still have the battery (model A1322) in their inventory for the mid-2012 MBP that was still in production until 2016.

If you're in California you should be able to get an AASP to order one although they will set their own labor price. Since the part still exists, you might even try at an Apple Store although the policy does seem to be that they won’t order one for your machine.
Other than that it’s pretty easy to do it yourself although Apple considers it “tampering”. You would need an aftermarket battery or a used, salvage battery.
