unable to restore files from time machine backup

When I attempt to restore files from time machine backups I get the message that Contacts and Mail can't be accessed because MacOS requires them. Is there a way to get into the time machine backup files to retrieve data that was lost?

It looks like you were trying to restore the Mail application and the Contacts application from Time Machine.

If you want to restore your contacts and the mail, you need to restore the folders created by Contacts and Mail, not the applications.

Contacts and Mail are storing their dater in the Library folder in your Home folder. What exactly do you need to restore?

You are posting in the High Sierra forum, but the profile signature is "iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)". Have you upgraded to High Sierra?
