problem when trying to unpack boot camp windows drivers reporting an installation error as incompatible for this computer model

On my new MacBook Pro 2017 I've installed VMware fusion 10 to install windows 10 pro to an external partitioned drive using boot camp. All went swimmingly well with the EDFI partition and NTFS data drive partition prepped, formatted and installed. Windows is running fine.

The issue came when trying unpack and install the recommended boot camp divers using the setup.exe file.

This failed to unpack reporting the installation failed with the version of boot camp is not intended for this computer model.

Further, this executable has the digital certificate issued to Apple Inc by Symantec as a class 3 sha256 code signed CA with an expired valid date stamp at Saturday 24th February 2018.

When running this by Apple support, they concluded that VMware fusion was not supported by boot camp?

Looking on VMware support articles, it clearly states macOS 10.13.x is supported as detailed in this url https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2088571

Not feeling loved here any help appreciated

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3), VMware Fusion 10, Windows 10 pro

If you install Windows via Bootcamp, you can 'import' the BC/Windows partition as a VM. To install BC drivers, you need to use a USB2 Flash drive and

Once you have the drivers, install using setup.exe from the Bootcamp folder.

If you installed W10 directly using VMware on a virtual disk, where the virtual disk is on the external drive, there is no BC drivers to be installed.
