Can products purchased in other countries be exchanged?

I was recently in Italy for a design competition and won an iPad. The iPad was purchased by a company there so it is registered to Italy. I would like to exchange the iPad for something of equal or lesser value. Can I exchange this item?

Call a store and ask them but I am thinking 95% you can't. Apple mobile devices tend to be country specific as to coverage options and Apple US may not want to have anything to do with an Italian iPad.
