Transfer User Preferences to Home User on External Drive - High Sierra

Hi, I'm using High Sierra. I transferred my home user to an external drive but my user preferences seem to have disappeared and preferences are back to the default. Instead of manually changing settings to how I like them, is there a way to migrate my original user preferences so it's linked to the home user on the external drive? Thaks in advance!

Can I restore preferences from "Library" or "System" folder? My Macbook Pro (13', mid2012, running Catalina) has been stolen. Luckily, a friend gave me her old Macbook Pro (17', 2009, running El Capitan). Before the Macbook got stolen, I did a backup. Instead of using Time Machine, I simply copied some folders into an external hard drive. I know how to copy the folders containing data (Download, etc.). But I don't know if I can copy anything from the User/Library folder and the System folder that I backed up. Migration Assistant does not seem to allow me to migrate from the folders. I am guessing my mistake was that I didn't use Time machine, but now it's too late to fix that. Is there anything I can do to recover some of my preferences from the backup? It would be nice to restore as much as possible of the old mac!

Current setup is late 2015 iMac running macOS Catalina with home folder on an external drive. Bought a new external drive and want to transfer home user folder from old external drive to new external drive. Suggestions to make exact copy of old drive on new drive. How to make sure iMac uses only new external drive where home user folder is now located. Thanks for your input.

Mojave-changing the home folder to an external hard drive I've got an iMac Pro with Mojave and I need to use an external hard drive for my data storage. With my prior Macs, I just changed the home folder to the external hard disk in the Users & Groups section of the System Preferences. This totally failed with the new computer and I've ended up locked out of that account. Does anyone know if it is still possible to use a second (non-boot) drive for your home folder location?
