Question: Connecting the Apple Cinema Display 30'' to MacBook (2016) with thunderbolt 3 (usb c)
Hello Apple Community
To all of you who want to connect an Apple Cinema Display 30'' to a new MacBook Pro with thunderbolt 3:
I had this problem, and tried various cable/adapter-solutions, that didn't work. You would think, that a simple Mini DisplayPort to usb c/thunderbolt 3 would do it, but this didn't work with the adapters I tried. However, after a lot of research I found ONE Mini DisplayPort to USB C that worked! I do not claim to know why this specific adapter works while other MiniDP to USB C adapters don't.
The adapter you need, is from the brand AllSmartLife. I can confirm that this cable works (in full resolution 2560x1600) with the Apple Cinema Display 30'' (2004) with a Dual Link DVI to MiniDP adapter which you will also need (which by the way Isi HDCP-compatible). The USB A from the Dual Link DVI also has to be connected (either to the MacBook with a USB A to USB C adapter or externally via a 12W iPad power brick).
I thought I would post this, since I would have loved to see a post like this before going on the exhausting adapter-hunt...
I hope you will find this helpful 🙂 Good day
