Why when I put my 2012 iMac to sleep it shuts down?

Why when I put my late 2012 27 inch iMac to sleep, does it shut down?

While asleep, I always hear the start tune play twice.

To restart, I have to always start from the beginning and so have to log in with my password.

I am running High Sierra Version 10.13.3

In all other respects she works fine.

Thanks for any ideas.
