I used the wrong login password too many times and my MacBook air is locked up. What's the best way to get past the login screen?

The article involves a number of "if" scenarios, none of which applies. I've seen reference to a solution involving restarting while holding down command-R to start up in recovery mode and using terminal to reset the password. Is that still a viable option?
