Can you delete an Apple ID if you do not need it anymore?

No. Apple IDs cannot be deleted.

Note that all purchases, except for music, are tied to the Apple ID, and in the case of Apps will forever require it to update.

Since an Apple ID is not tied to a device, nor is limited to being used with Apple devices. Deleting an Apple Id is generally not required.

If you must, you can remove personal information, and payment methods from it, and simply stop using it.
