iMac remotely firmware locked

2015: Bought my mom a 21.5" imac. She passed away and I didn't use her iMac for over two years (no updates).

2018: Now I'm trying to fire it up and her password doesn't work. I get the error message "Your computer is disabled. Try again in xx minutes". I've restarted in recovery mode and tried her Apple ID and other assorted passwords to no effect.

How do I get this iMac unlocked and working again?

iMac, OS is ~two years old. no updates

Hi,

Were you able to successfully boot Recovery Mode? Or were you stopped by a firmware password? (Padlock with password field)

Can you please post a picture of your Mac displaying the “Your Mac is disabled” screen? It’d be much appreciated.

Were you previously asked to enter a system unlock PIN in order to boot your Mac? If so, your Mac may have been remotely locked through Find My iPhone via iCloud.

That’s odd. I’ve never seen that screen before, but I’m suspecting that your Mac got locked by iCloud since your Mac is disabled presumably by too many incorrect passcode attempts (similar to iOS) and it firmware locked your Mac with that same passcode. The passcode I’m referring to is a 4 (maybe 6) digit passcode that was set by whoever got onto the iCloud account that was set up with Find my Mac.

If you wait the 60 minutes, are you prompted to enter the system lock PIN? If so, your Mac was unquestionably locked by iCloud.

Regardless, only Apple can reset a forgotten firmware password. You’ll need to take your Mac to the nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
