Unable to edit iTunes song info

Hello everyone, I hope this is the right place to ask.

I recently switched to a new computer and I am struggling to edit song info in iTunes. The songs are on my iPhone (running the latest iOS) and I have it plugged into my Windows computer (latest version).

I can't seem to edit any of my songs. I can't type in the boxes for "artist" or "song name" or anything. The cursor appears but I cannot edit anything.

I've checked my iTunes folder (the one under This PC > Music) and right clicked to Properties > Security. My username under advanced is set to "full control". On the main page, there is a black box in the "read-only" checkbox. Unchecking it does nothing; it returns if I exit. I've restarted multiple times, so it doesn't seem to be that.

Any help? I'm getting really annoyed!

Here is the image from the advanced security of iTunes. Every option has "full control" and I checked the child object permissions (blacked out info is just my name).

This is what Get Info looked like. I can click on a box (like song name) and the cursor will appear, but I cannot type (the song name was entered previously).

I believe they are all MP3 files... I'm not sure what else they would have been.

Other than that, none of the files under the iTunes folder had the "read only" checked. Some had hidden, and some had the box (meaning, I believe, that this option doesn't apply to this data type, because folders can't be read-only), but had read-only checked.

Did you replace permissions on child objects? If you inspect the properties of a particular track that you cannot edit can you cornfim that you and System have full access, and that it isn't marked as read-only? In Get Info are the fields greyed out to let you know that they cannot be changed, or does it appear to accept your changes only to go back to the original values?

Convert ID3 tags only works with MP3 files, and then only if you can write to them.

Sorry to be pedantic, but did you click Yes in the first of those two images such that permissions were actually updated? Doing so either updates the permissions or indicates a problem with ownership that you need to fix first.

Folders are always marked as read only even if you untick the box and apply.

iTunes Store purchases are .m4a files. The file tab of Get Info will show the file type.

If the flashing cursor appears in a box, but your typing is ignored, then that feels like something different form the permissions problems I am familiar with. Like iTunes is treating the characters as something that isn't printable, e.g. Alt-A instead of A. Could any of the modifier keys (alt, ctrl, alt-gr) be stuck?

Alright, I ended up fixing it by downloading another software (Sharepod), which synced everything properly. I'm still not sure exactly what was wrong, but it is all working now. Thank you for all the help!

EDIT: Spoke a little too soon. I can now edit the copies of the music I transferred from my iPhone to my computer via Sharepod, but if I add another song to my computer, it will not add to my iPhone, even after syncing. I cannot edit the song info on the songs on my iPhone still.

You know what, I did read the bit where you wrote "The songs are on my iPhone" but somehow assumed that because you were attempting to repair permissions within your media folder you would be trying to alter the tags of the files in your library that are stored there, rather than those on the device. 😕

In general you should edit content in your iTunes library and sync that to your device, that way everything will be the same.
