TextEdit cannot save files

After recent High Sierra upgrade, TextEdit will not save files. I have tried changing extension from ".rtf" to ".txt" and various Preferences including reset to Default. I can't figure out what happened.

iBook G3 & iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Textedit problem with macOS Monterey On 4/13/22, I upgraded my Mojave software to Monterey 12.3.1 and have had some problems since then. One of them has been with Textedit. When I click on Textedit now, instead of opening a new document it gives me this. (below) I can then click on New Document for a new document but I have never had this happen before. Isn't there a way to click on Textedit and have it open a new document and by pass this? Thanks, Martha [Re-Titled by Moderator]

TextEdit search function not working. Since replacing my MacBook Pro I haven't been able to search TextEdit files. All the files are there, but when I hit search it just says 'Searching TextEdit' at the top of the window and nothing more happens. Any ideas?

Why does the text editor in OSX v10.13.3 no longer allow pure text files One of the unsung gems of any OS (Windows or Apple) is the text editor. It edits PLAIN TEXT - that's its function. Why has the latest version lost the ability to do this. It now insists on saving as a "Rich text" format which is neither RTF or text. This is absurd.If you are wondering why plain text should be needed then you don't known that passing a file containing all sorts of junk such as formatting, hyperlinks etc will be cleaned out by saving as a plain text file. It is the fastest way to do this and is available in every OS I have known.
