Thanks LN for your input as well. On this point, how would you go about "breaking down" this LARGE library into smaller chunks (datafiles). If I could break these down to say many 200GB libraries and only sync the system library to the cloud & then archive others once they gets to a certain size - this could be an option?

So in the end, is the only way to export certain pic files, then delete from the system library - then import these exported files to a new library? of coarse, backing all up to external sources... Sure seems a lot a work - no?

The easiest and fastest way to break things down is to duplicate the library and delete the photos you do not want in that library - any other way loses some things

Personally I find two libraries to be better - a large archive and a smaller current library - my large library is about 80,000 photos and my small one about 27,000

say many 200GB libraries

How much storage can you afford on your iPhone for photos?

As a rough estimate - even with optimize storage on, a 200GB iCloud Photos Library will need at least 20GB on your iPhone.

I would not split the library, only duplicate it. Then remove all photos from the copy, that you do not need in iCloud.

I keep only the Favorites album in my iCloud Photos Library, and the most recent photos I am currently working on.

This way you will still have a full archive of all photos on your large drive, but a selection of the photos that are important for you in iCloud.
