iMac display issue

The colors on my screen are doing strange things. The white is getting so white - crazy bright. And I cannot see the outline for most boxes like the search box on the google page. I’ve recalibrated and recalibrated and set it to default settings but it still does this. It’s also hard to see pastels. This iMac has the newest OS but was doing this before the update. iMac is 4 years old.
