I'm on a late 2015 iMac OS 10.13.2. Recently (perhaps when the system last upgraded itself) Spotify loads and opens every time I turn on the computer. Wasn't my idea, and I'd like to defeat it. I have turned off Spotify's "load on startup" option, but it does so anyway. Any ideas?

Check in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items. Also check in ~/Library/LaunchAgents. Also in Library/Startup Items. Another thing to check is whether when you choose Apple menu > Restart, Shutdown or Logout if the box "Reopen windows..." is checked.
Thanks so much for your suggestions, but none of them seem to make the difference. I find no evidence of anything checked or listed that would cause this. I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking at in Library/LaunchAgents, but there's no reference in any of the items listed that points to Spotify.

Right Click on Spotify's icon in the Dock > Options. Uncheck "Open at Login"

You're welcome. Then the only other options are the ones macjack mentioned.
It is ~/Library/LaunchAgents, that's your Home Library. From your Finder "Go" menu > "Go to folder" and enter
~/Library/LaunchAgents Then press GO.
