ouch! Trying to set up apple mail on an iPad 64 using ios11 to access app mail server on the GoDaddy system. The AppleMail will not log on to the server to receive mail, even though it can send using the server. GoDaddy tells me they no longer support those old mail systems, in favor of Microsoft Exchange mail servers, which I don't need. How do I get my iPad to access the server using Applemail?

If GoDaddy is dropping support for POP mail accounts, then that’s not an issue with whatever email client your using. It’s an issue with your unwillingness to either move to whatever protocol GoDaddy supports or find an alternate hosting company and move your domains there.

You cannot lay blame at the feet of the email client if the source of the issue is unsupported protocols on the server side.

I use 1and1 for my domain hosting and they support IMAP for my personal domain emails (they also support ecpxchange if one prefers) and have zero issues with iOS mail and those accounts. Never have had an issue either. Exchange mail accounts also work fine with iOS mail when I’ve set them up.
