trouble viewing iphone photo backups

Ive never really understood where the iphone is backing up my photos, though i do have the sync photos button checked when backing up.

I simply do a manual drag and drop of all my iphone photos (when my phone is connected) into aperture so that i can actually access them.. I store them in a folder called iphone.

However I am assuming that since i have sync photos checked itunes is backing up my photos also.. but i cant tell to where?? How do i figure this out.. and perhaps stop using aperture & doubling up when i maybe dont need to...

my laptop runs 10.10.5 yosemite & im using an iphone 8.

thanks

Howdy JACKRUBY,

I understand that you'd like to know about backing up and syncing your Photos with your iPhone and Aperture. Fortunately we've a good bit of information for you that should be helpful.

First, it should be made clear that the syncing process in iTunes transfers the photos that you've transferred from your iPhone into Aperture back to your iPhone. This, in and of itself, shouldn't be considered a backup. While the process does, indeed, copy the photos back to your iPhone, there's no way to sync those photos back to Aperture should you need to do so.

Note: Syncing and backing up are two separate processes in iTunes; syncing alone does not mean you’ve safely backed up your photos and videos.

iCloud: iCloud Photo Library or iTunes?

With regards to making sure that you have a good, reliable backup of your photos, your best bet would be to set up Time Machine to back up your Aperture Library: How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac

With regards to "doubling up," an important consideration here is whether you're deleting your photos from your iPhone when you import them to Aperture. If you're not deleting the photos from your iPhone after importing, the process of syncing your photos is effectively creating a third copy of each photo (one in Aperture, two on the iPhone). If you are, however, deleting the photos after importing, the sync process does, indeed, create a copy of each photo from Aperture on your iPhone.

Hope this helps, and do let us know if you have any additional questions.

Cheers!
