Is FireVault on by default for new Macs?

My macbook pro 2016 (with touchbar) has FireVault on, but I don't remember enabling it.

Hey austin901!

Great question about FileVault encryption services. In more recent versions of macOS, (starting with OS X Yosemite) there's a recommendation prompt during the update installation process that encourages you to enable FileVault on computers where it isn't already active. The option to do so is checked by default when this prompt appears, and unless manually unchecked, will automatically enable FileVault on the computer moving forward.

Additionally, if you enabled FileVault (either manually or through the update installer) on an old user account, subsequent user accounts created after FileVault is enable will all have it automatically enabled.

I hope this clears things up. If you've found that FileVault is currently enabled and you'd rather it weren't, this article can help you with the change: macOS Sierra: Turn off FileVault encryption

Cheers!

Yes it seems Apple is trying to encourage its use, therfore you have to be paying attention during the setup process to opt out.
