choppy unwatchable movie playback?

Hi - I have a brand new, high spec windows 10 notebook, and the latest version of itunes. When I play videos that I have downloaded from itunes or have ripped from my discs the playback is choppy. The ripped movies play in the windows player fine, the itunes movies won't play in other players. Help?
