Checking charge level on Apple Pencil

Just purchased ipad pro and am having problem being able to check battery charge on my apple pencil. I've enabled the "batteries" widget but it's only telling me the charge on my ipad - it's not even showing my apple pencil. Sounds like it should. And I was just using it a few minutes ago. So what do I need to do?

You want to enable the “batteries” widget - there is no Apple Pencil widget.
