Seeing new DVD/CD player
I have just purchased a couple year old iMac and having trouble getting my new DVD/CD player to recognize on the computer. It says it can be used on OS system. Running El Capitan 10.11.6. Any help?

As stated, unless you put a disk in it it won't "show up". Also,
depending on how your Finder preferences are set, it may only
show up in the side bar of an open window.
If no disc is in, you can see if it is connected by going to
Applications->Utilities->System Information. On the left
hand side click hardware and then select the interface by which
you connected the drive (probably USB). It should show up
there even if there is no disc inserted.
Personally, I have two different types of LG drives and they work fine.

Without specifics as to what DVD/CD player you are referring to or how it is connected to the iMac it is very difficult to help you. You may want to return it and buy a DVD/CD player from www.macsales.com who specializes in Macs and can provide support if you need it. They can also help you find the right device that matches your needs.
What model/brand is it? Any external player/burner will only show in the Finder after you insert a CD or DVD (and then the DVD icon will show).
If it is an external Apple Superdrive, it may not work with any Mac that has a built in Superdrive.
If you have an external USB drive, just go to this web site "How To Make SuperDrive Work on Unsupported Mac" and it may solve your problem.I followed the directions and it makes my SuperDrive work perfectly.
