We have an Apple TV A1427. We are now on our 4th remote. The latest one we ordered is less than 4 months old and is already bad. Is there a replacement remote that is better, more reliable?

You do know the battery is user replaceable?

Buttons work for a while, then won’t. Changed battery, still the same. Sometimes if you push hard it works, sometimes not. Just like the one we just replaced.
Haven't seen any other reports, perhaps it is based on how it is being used. As stated there is the remote app, there is also the option of using a universal remote.
