Question: Path missing or damaged?

Getting an error message on MacBook Air only a bit over 1 year old. Say “path /System/Installation/Packages/OSinstall.mpkg appears to be missing or damaged. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.”

I have tried 3 times with no success. Help!

Install El Capitan or Later from Scratch

If possible backup your files.

  1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the CommandandRkeys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  2. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  3. When Disk Utility loads select the volume (indented entry, usually Macintosh HD) from the Device list.
  4. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's main window. A panel will drop down.
  5. Set the Format type to APFS (SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  6. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  7. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  8. Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button.

This will install the version of OS X you had installed.

Try starting in safe mode. If that works no need to redo system yet:

Shut down system

Press start button

Hold shift key when you hear the chime or see the grey screen.

Safe mode takes extra time to load so be patient.

If it starts up you can try disk utility. Then try a regular start up.

Thanks for the help. Just tried it out and it said “Deleting has failed”. Details states:

Deleting APFS volume from it’s APFS container

On mounting disc1s1

The volume “Macintosh HD” on disk1s1 couldn’t be on melted because it is my process 0 (kernel)

The operation couldn’t be completed. (Com.apple.StorageKit error 118.)

Operation failed...

Search for "path /System/Installation/Packages/OSinstall.mpkg appears to be missing or damaged" on Google. I found quite a few links dealing with this problem. The cure is not simple, apparently.

Are you trying the above while booted from the Recovery HD? Are you trying to erase just the macOS volume and not the entire drive?
