Why do I have to PAY to share my music via family sharing???

I've been trying to set up Family Sharing. I am the Family Organizer; I'm trying to set up sharing between my husband and my son. I can set up Purchase Sharing and Location Sharing, but when I try to turn on Apple Music, I get sent to iTunes where it tells me I have to purchase a $14.99/month plan. Why do I have to pay a monthly fee, to share music I've already paid for once?

It works the same way as it does for Apps. Exactly the same.

Not sure what tech support you are talking to. But Apple Music is absolutely not required.

Once Family sharing is set up, you can:

On your iPhone or iPod touch

  1. If you're not signed in, sign in with your Apple ID.
  2. Open the store app that you want to download content from, then go to the Purchased page:
    • iTunes Store: On your iPhone or iPod touch, tap More > Purchased.
    • iBooks: Tap Purchased.
    • App Store: Tap Updates > Purchased.
  3. Tap the family member's name to see their content. Learn what to do if you don’t see any content or can't tap your family member.
  4. To download an item, tap User uploaded file next to it.

The music will not appear directly in the Music App, or the Tv app, but will be shareable, and can be accessed as explained above.

There is again no requirement to pay for an Apple Music Plan whatsoever.

I have no idea what glitch there was before; my family could see purchased APPS, but not purchased MEDIA. I had to completely delete Family Sharing and start over again from the very beginning. For now, it looks like it works. The Apple Music subscription runs out on April 16th; if my husband & son can no longer see music I purchased then, we'll know there's still a problem.

Note, that Family Sharing will only share music you bought from iTunes.

If you had music that was ripped from CDs or added from a different source to iTunes Family, Sharing will not share that, and you would need either Apple Music to upload or match them, and then share them.

But that is entirely outside of the Family Sharing music feature.
