MacBook Pro 2015 and USB ports

Macbook Pro 2015 with usb 2 ports need new External hard drive but they all appear to have usb 3 ports. Do I need an adapter? Any recommendations please for Ext H D and adapter.

External hard drive connection I just got apple notebook air . I got and external hard drive for time machine ..but it connects with usb cable. Can I get an adapter to make usb fit the port on my air?
