I have always stuck with the principal: never upgrade - until today.
At the suggestion of a Mac support person, I upgraded to Sierra. As a result I have lost all my history and all changes to bookmarks over the past 6 months.

This was actually upgrading to Sierra, NOT High Sierra. I accept that this is true of any upgrade that you should back up. Pity the Apple support guy didn't remind me, and get me to do it.
I shan't be upgrading again - they have always caused me trouble - lost data, lost history, lost preferences, programmes (oops sorry, they are now 'apps') that no longer work.
Moral of the story: never upgrade.
If an app (programme) no longer works it is because the app developer is not maintaining the app and keeping it current. It is your decision whether to upgrade or not but a good reason for doing so is to get security improvements.

If you have been using Macs for 25 years and haven't learned to backup it's probably best you never upgrade. Of course many things will no longer work correctly eventually such as browsers, email etc. You also wouldn't be able to ever replace hardware that inevitably fails.
And for what it's worth, that's true of Windows and Linux as well.
This is why it's so important to backup your important data prior to upgrading macOS.
