27" iMac i5 Late 2012 shuts off w/o error message and requires SMC reset to turn on

macOS Sierra version 10.12.6

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)

1TB Fusion Drive with

2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and

8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M 512 MB

I am essentially have the same issue as these other three threads linked below, all of which are closed to further comment, and it appears this problem hasn't been solved. Also found a some YT videos about it from this year (2018).

LATE 2012 27 inch IMAC Power Off Randomly

27 iMac (2012) crashes and requires smc reset to turn on

This one has 39 pages of comments detailing the same issue, and there is no consensus of a fix/repair that has actually worked or that the Apple Genius bar can even find. Sounds like I'm in for many trips to the Genius Bar and no way am I paying for logic boards etc when none of those cases worked.

Late 2012 (27") (i5) iMac - Keeps shutting down!

My issue:

My iMac will randomly shut down 3+ times per day. It has gradually gotten worse over the past 2+ years, and at least I am not running any graphics or editing programs. All four times it's happened today I was simply using Google Chrome browser to access gmail, calendars, trello, etc. It happened twice last night again using a Google Doc and Hangouts. It happens when others are using the computer to print labels or super basic tasks that should not be difficult for such an expensive iMac.

The only way to restart requires SMC reset, so I unplug the power cable from the back, wait a few minutes, plug it back in and hopefully the power button works, if not I repeat that process. I used to get error messages that would pop up after reboot with error codes etc. I don't think I still have any of them or screen shots, but I can look. I do remember looking up some of the error codes listed and it said something about kernel panics, but I haven't had one of those error messages for about a month now. It just shuts off to a black screen like it's lost power, and then requires SMC reset to turn back on.

I found a panic report from 02/16/2018, I'll put that below the EtreCheck one.

Things I've tried:

  • Run Apple Hardware Test as instructed from Apple Support (disconnecting everything and restarting while pressing D). This test said there were not hardware issues, but I've read in forums that this is detailed or reliable and that Genius Bar can do more, but still not find the issue.

macOS Sierra: Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test

  • Tried to find the crash report using Console, but apparently this version of Sierra has known issues with Console not showing all those reports correctly. I tried searching system.log in Console with "shutdown cause" and got nothing. When searching just with "shutdown" it returned GoogleSoftwareUpdateDaemon shutdowns. I don't know if that is related but I can list those. Four of them listed (in bold) coincide with the random shutdowns today and last night but not the rest.

  • I deleted unused or faulty apps manually. I deleted Clean My Mac 2 and 3 that someone else downloaded to my iMac. I deleted any third party apps I was unfamiliar with. I don't know how to check all plug-ins and delete those.

  • I began the process listed here macOS Sierra: If your Mac restarts and a message appears. I currently am in Safe Mode (macOS Sierra: Start up in safe mode). I opened app store and updated apps like article says. It's been about 2.5 hours without shutdown in SafeMode. I don't if that will last until I can get this figured out.

  • I downloaded EtreCheck in Safe Mode and generated a report. I will attach that below.

  • Searched system.log using Console with "crash" and found quite a few .ReportCrash listings starting from about 20mins before shut down until now. There have been several of these reports during the time I've been in Safe Mode, but no shut down yet.

  • Next steps will be to delete and possible re-download and install apps like browsers etc, if I can do that in Safe Mode. I'm wondering if that Google Software Update Daemon might be the issues as shown above. I use Google Chrome as my primary browser and I'm sure there are lots of extensions etc added on to it.
