How do I transfer files back after reinstalling OS?

I need to reinstall OS (now 10.11.6). Everything on my iMac is backed up to external drive. If I erase hard drive and reinstall, how do I transfer back everything that was on the drive?

IMac-OTHER, Mac OS X (10.7.5)
