importing raw footage to external hard drive?

I'd like to set up i-movie in a way that when I insert an SD card and import files to i-movies, it imports directly to an external drive? I'm hoping this will make the application of graphics and effects for playback faster and smoother during editing?

Will this work and can it be done?

Im using i-move 10.1.8 on iMac
