I stupidly got my new iPhone id wrong and am now left with on id for my iPad and another for my phone (only one digit difference but obviously different passwords).
My mistake in my hurry to set up the phone but creating a lot of hassle now.
How can I merge the two or delete one and start again (while saving my stuff..)?

You can't merge accounts (nor transfer purchases between accounts) nor delete them. If nothing was downloaded on the second you could just stop using it. If you did buy content on it you could put the two accounts in a Family Share : Family Sharing - Apple Support

Try to go to www.appleid.apple.com and restore your password if you have forgotten it. If you have Security questions and if you can reach the email that is your Apple-ID then it would work!
