Ipad backup

My icloud hasn't been backed up in 8 months! I finally decided to back it up a few days ago, but its taking forever! its saying that it has 9 hours remaining, but I feel its only 2-3 hours. How do I know for sure how many hours it has remaining? And when should I do the next backup, so it doesn't take this long ever again?
