Mac Mini late 2014 is beeping every 30 seconds - no apparent notification or other indicator of an alarm

I have a late 2014 mac mini, 2.6 Ghz i5 processor, 8 Gb memory, with a 1 Tb hard drive.

I'm running High Sierra 10.13.3.

Today the machine has started beeping every 30 seconds. The beep is similar to a failed process or an alert. I can find nothing that is causing this. I bought the computer in June of last year.

I recently fiddled with using a USB flash drive for running the OS, and it appears to have had some effects on the hard drive o/s, but I'm reticent to reset to factory conditions if it's not going to fix the issue.
