How do I unlock Mac OSX Base System

I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro 15”.

Yesterday mac sierra asked if it should update, without reading I clicked yes.

Now when I try to power on, I get stuck at the Apple logo and loading bar.

When end I reboot in internet recovery, it brings up Mac utilities but here is where Im stuck.

I’ve read countless threads on here that say I need to first erase the OS X Base System But when I go to erase it’s grayed out and I can’t click on it.

Then an I tried to reinstall Sierra but it says the OS X System is LOCKED!

How do I move forward from this to get my computer working again?

Thanks for your help!

I believe you need to completely reformat (basically obliterate) everything on the physical drive from the top and not just the volumes/partitions. As in right at the top level drive.

In Disk Utility do you have View>Show all Devices selected? I don't recall if the default was "Show Only Volumes" when brought up in Internet Recovery.
