Is it possible to add a costume ringtone in your WhatsApp alerts? I already got a costume one for my e-mail on the phone, but that one does not show in the app.

I already contacted the support of whatsapp, but got no answer yet. I was just curious if somebody got already an answer for that. I will let you know if they reply to my email.
You can choose a sound for the notifications in WhatsApp >Settings > Message notifications / Group Notifications.
You can not set set a ringtone for calls, as that is currently shared with the Contacts list.

Hi Kathleen, same thing: the default ringtone and any ringtone for a specific contact is currently shared between the Phone.app and WhatsApp.
You will just have to look at the screen to tell them apart.
For voice/video calls you can set a default ringtone in Settings > Sounds > Ringtone. You may set a different ringtone for individual contacts in Contacts.app. Again: this is shared for Phone and WhatsApp.
For chat notifications you can set a default notification sound (not a ringtone from external source) in WhatsApp > Settings > Notifications > Sound > [choose from list]. You can set a different sound per contact in WhatsApp > Chat > User contact info (top) > Custom Tone > [choose from list] . WhatsApps’ meaning of ‘custom’ is that you get a (limited) choice.
The ability to change settings in apps is up to the app developer. Check with them to see if they provide a method to change their sounds.
