Will Apple eventually get rid of the home button?

You never mentioned that in your post, but no way of knowing what Apple wants or will do unless they announce it, and as roaminggnome said, we cannot speculate here.

They did just that with the iPhone X. It has no home button.

Well, no one here would know what Apple is going to do unless they make an announcement. However, if you look at the iPhone X, you will see that it does not have a home button like other devices.

That is exactly what the iPhone X does. No home button, swipe to get around
