How should I format an external HD from my macBook

I want to play downloaded movies from my macBook via my Sony Blu Ray player. the Plex app isn't any good, so I'm going to use a WD 1TB external HD - how should I format it, so it can be read and played on my Sony 1700 ?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), 12Gb RAM

Thank you for looking and Exactly. I've tried my usual movie back up HD ( probably mac extended OS ) and that went play. I'll try reformatting MS-Dos

I would have guessed that no Mac-specific format was going to work. Just doesn't seem likely.

Is there any way to format it directly from the player, and then see what format it is and if it will mount on your Mac? There should be a way to do that. I've got a DISH Hopper box where I can use a USB drive, but I thought it was some proprietary file system.

I've got an old Sony Blu-Ray player with a USB port, but I thought that was just for a USB flash drive for BD Live. The one thing I did like about the USB port was that it would accept a USB keyboard, and I could use that as an input rather than using the keypad to search through letters. Never tried a hard drive though.

I had an old Toshiba HD from 3 or 4 years ago, with a load of downloads on it, and they will mostly play - I can't remember but pretty sure I filled it from an old work PC running Windows when I had one..

Sounds about right. Mac file systems are proprietary. I would have guessed FAT-32, NTFS, or ExFAT. Macs don’t play well with NTFS.

I had a Sony Blu-Ray player from 2011. I hated the onscreen search using directional keys to highlight a character. I thought maybe someone had programmed its USB to accept a generic USB keyboard and it worked. I was using it for searches on Crackle and YouTube. However, Google stopped support for that API so YouTube no longer works.
