iPhone 6s Photos not backing up to iCloud

I have a 64 GB iPhone 6s and I signed up for the iCloud 50GB plan yesterday. Backup took a bit of time and completed successfully, however, none of my photos were backed up - the size of the backup was exactly the same as before I had turned on Photos backup. I had previous been on the 5GB free tier and therefore had not backed up my photos - but although I've upgraded, none of my photos are backing up. I've restarted my phone, reset wifi, turned iCloud backups off and on but to no avail. Please help.

If you are syncing photos using iCloud Photo Library, the photos aren't included in an iCloud backup. Check Settings/Your Name/iCloud to see if Photos syncing is on.

Thanks for your response, Eric. I was having some trouble with getting the sync going even with Photo library turned on, but I restarted my phone and it seems to be resolved now. All photos have synced.
