Files duplicate themselves when I move them to the trash.

I want to get rid of some files on my hard drive. They end in .app and .dmg. When I drag them out of the file list for the hard drive, they duplicate themselves. How can I delete them permanently?

Don't drag them to the Trash. Select the file(s). CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the selection. Choose Move to Trash from the context menu.
